Arden Arrowood blames herself for the disappearance of her toddler twin sisters. She was eight years old when she briefly left her sisters unattended in the front yard and returned to find them gone. Now 20 years later, Arden returns to Arrowood, the ancestral home she has inherited in Keokuk, IA, reeling from a failed relationship that has left her trapped in the past and unable to complete her master's thesis. Back at -Arrowood, she tries to resurrect her former life, going to former favorite haunts and reconnecting with an old boyfriend, Ben, now a dentist and engaged to be married. Still haunted by the twins' disappearance, she questions everyone who remembers the tragedy. McHugh (The Weight of Blood) spares no detail as she teases readers with possible answers to the mystery of the twins, though the solution, when it finally does arrive, disappoints in its lack of explanation or follow-through. Sarah Scott captures Arden's youth and indecision convincingly, though. -VERDICT Fans of McHugh's previous thriller may want to skip this one, unless they are prepared for an uneven story heavy with description.-Nancy R.
