Run, Turkey, Run!

Booklist

Turkey knows he'll be Thanksgiving dinner unless he escapes from the farmer. He tries disguising himself. If he rolls in the mud, will the farmer think he's a pig? If he swims in water, will the farmer think he's a duck? NO! Run, Turkey, run! The only thing left for Turkey is to run away; perhaps if he covers himself with leaves, he'll be safe. YES! On Thanksgiving Day the family eats grilled cheese sandwiches, while Turkey gives thanks. But when the family goes to pick out a Christmas tree, who do they find? Run, Turkey, run! Will fowl play result? The acrylic paint-and-ink illustrations, a cross between Betsy Lewin's and Lillian Hoban's, are comical and full of feathered fun. While the premise may put kids off eating turkey, they'll gobble up the humor.--Cummins, Julie Copyright 2007 Booklist

Run, Turkey, Run!

Kirkus Reviews

"Turkey is having a terrible day." And what other kind of day would he have on the eve of Thanksgiving? He certainly won't be giving thanks if the farmer catches him. "Run, Turkey, Run!" Turkey spies the pigpen and hides in the mud. Maybe the farmer will think Turkey's a pig. Does he? "No! Run, Turkey, Run! / Muckity-muck, here comes the farmer!" Poor Turkey tries to be a duck and then a horse, but the farmer knows his animals too well. Turkey finally finds safety in the forest . . . until the family comes searching for a Christmas tree. "Run, Turkey, Run!" Mayr's onomatopoeic turkey escapes are a nice pair with Rader's energetic watercolors. Listeners will laugh at Turkey in a diving mask and giggle at the clankity-crunchity fun. Since the farmer's children look perfectly happy with a grilled-cheese Thanksgiving, here is a fine companion to Dav Pilkey's 'Twas the Night before Thanksgiving (1990). Sure to be a participatory storytime favorite. (Picture book. 3-7) Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.

K-Gr 1-Thanksgiving time at the farm can only mean one thing-Run, Turkey, Run! He tries to outdistance the farmer in the horse barn, pig sty, and duck pond, but the man is always close behind. With the helpful shouts of his animal friends, Turkey heads for the woods and finally manages to fool his pursuer by disguising himself as a tree. The farmer and his family have grilled-cheese sandwiches with all the trimmings while Turkey gives thanks. The pair meet again when the farmer goes to the woods in search of a Christmas tree-and the refrain begins all over again. This fast-paced romp is as much fun to read as it is to listen to. The simple text conveys just enough excitement to be suspenseful but not frightening (unless you're a turkey). The illustrations are light and humorous with a comical turkey, determined farmer, and great cast of barnyard extras. The animals' expressions are priceless. Good choice for storytime.-Catherine Callegari, Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NH (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
